ThisIsWhatWeDo was created by Mark in 2013. After working in the industry a long time he took the leap to open his own salon and he hasn’t looked back.
The salon team consists of Natalie, Emma, Mark, Rachel and Katie. Who have all worked together previously. We all had visions of working in a creative, relaxed and happy environment where client care means absolutely everything to us.
Mark essentially wanted us all to work in a salon that was different. We all agreed that we wanted to shy away from the standard & boring clinical look of most other salons, hence our distressed reception desk (designed and made by our Master using reclaimed floor boards and discarded copper pipes amongst other strange objects!), our quirky and unusual light fittings, our exposed brick walls and random handmade drinks tables etc. Our concept is fun, new things, old things, and we hope this is what we have created.
Our salon is located in a beautiful victorian arcade amongst stylish and quaint cafes, shops and very friendly watering holes (perfect for our out of hour soirees!).
Our focus is giving our clients a unique, fun and calming salon experience while creating cutting edge hair styles or just an excellent cut. We have a salon dog called Willow Willenstein - a bassett hound who is fighting for the light in a dark, dark world. We are a collective hive, a cult, a new "hairworld" order.
Mark Edwards has been hairdressing for 24 years and has a huge passion for the industry. Although Mark prefers edgy cutting and colouring techniques he has been know to pull off a pretty good beehive on the odd occasion. Mark is also the creator of the “directional wave". When Mark isn't in the salon you would most likely find him in a nordotronic night club in Berlin or at a gig.
Natalie Canning has been hairdressing for 17 years. Her talents include world class hair up, creative cutting, bouncy blow drys and brightening up anybody’s day.
Emma Minnican began her career in hairdressing 18 years ago and hasn’t looked back. Her passion is to push hairdressing boundaries with texturised clipper cutting and "en trend" barbering. When Emma isn't here you'll find her being an amazing full time Mum to Lexi & Jaymee (our trainee).
Rachel Evans has over 10 years experience and started her career in Tony & Guy where she trained as a stylist. Her cutting skills are second to none and I swear by her huge and very glamorous blow drys!
Katie Edwards started her hairdressing career 11 years ago but took time out before completing her true course with us. In that time she took a different route into the exciting world of retail and visual merchandising. Although Katie learnt a lot creatively she always missed the hairdressing industry. Katie joined our team in 2014 to finish her hairdressing training and continues to blow our minds daily with the styles she creates for her models. A huge star in the making! In her spare time Katie loves a disco dance in Bristol, hanging out with her lovely family and is prone to a Mai Tai or six with Alex!
Jaymee Barrett Jaymee is our salon ray of sunshine, she works on our busiest day - a Saturday and keeps order on a chaotic day. Jaymee, we love you!
Alexandra "Lois" Lane Possibly the most bizarre of all our salon characters hence our tweets and Facebook statuses sounding like the ramblings of a mad woman. Alex, started her career in hairdressing, training alongside Mark and Natalie 15 years ago and quickly realised her talents were not built for the exciting world of hairdressing. Alex travelled the world and lived in Sydney, New York, Buenos Aires & London before returning to the green green grass of home in 2013 and marrying her long term love. Alex reunited with the salon team in 2014 after embarking on many a diverse jobs. When Alex isn't in the salon you will find her mooching around antique shops, doing lunch or searching for the perfect Dirty Martini!
